CHAPTER FOURTEEN

We need a cunning plan

Malka Selby

HAYDN SEEMED TO DRIFT off into a world of his own when he told us he hadn’t deliberately killed a vampire since he was a teenager. I wondered if he had a guilty conscience about any of their deaths, deliberate or otherwise.

He portrayed himself as a vampire-slaying vigilante warrior. I could imagine him out late on a Friday night, riding the night bus in search of death-to-vampire action. That was how he presented himself; a first impression makes a lasting impression.

The first time we met, he lifted me up and slammed me into a window, which fortunately didn’t break. A short while later, he attacked two’ bloodsuckers,’ as he called them, right in front of me, as if carrying knives like that was legal — it wasn’t.

I didn’t like him that first day.

But since then, I’d seen another side to the fiery giant. His softer, caring, fluffy-bunny side. The Haydn that Beck had fallen for. The Haydn who looked after everyone on the street when he didn’t need to. The Haydn who’d stick his neck out for friends in need.

I definitely didn’t approve of him wandering around the streets of London armed to the teeth and looking for a fight, but I understood a little better about the sense of responsibility he carried with him, which led him to do the things he did.

Ultimately, he was a good guy, and I was glad he was on my side. At least my mom made one wise decision when she chose him as my guardian.

Although, the magical bond she set up to tie us together was a step too far. An arrangement I hadn’t consented to. No way. But Haydn agreed to it, so there was an example of his poor judgment causing a problem.

We all rose to get dressed, and I couldn’t fault that as the next step in our plans.

My clothing lay strewn across the floor. I tried to be casual about gathering them and dressing, but still, us all being in the same room was strange, even though Haydn had his back to me. I knew he kept his back turned and didn’t sneak a glimpse because I watched him without any letup.

Nice arse, Haydn Byrne.

In fact, if I got over my initial impression, I had to admit he seemed like a nice guy with tonnes of stellar qualities, and he was fiercely protective of his friends.

He was also yummy eye candy.

The two of them, Beck and Haydn together, were sizzling hot just standing next to each other, and I feared my retinas might melt with the heat when I looked at them.

As soon as I was decent, I had to say something to get my mind away from the water-earth-fire witch sandwich fantasy, which had begun to play out in my mind.

“Well, it’s a great idea to have that division of labor for the bed-and-breakfast accommodation business, because getting a job can be hard if you don’t have a mobile phone these days.
